Medical laboratory technology is the branch of medical science responsible for performing laboratory investigations relating to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
Medical laboratory technicians play an important role in the prevention and diagnosis of diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and AIDS. Medical lab technicians work under the supervision of a physician, lab manager or medical technologist and perform laboratory tests on specimens.
The tests that lab techs conduct assist doctors in verifying the causes of an illness, making medical decisions and determining treatment options. Some of the areas in which medical lab technicians may specialize include:
- Microbiology
- Hematology
- Blood banking
- Immunology
- Clinical chemistry
- Molecular biology
- Cytotechnology
The role of a medical laboratory technician include:
- to collect, process, and analyze specimens.
- perform lab procedures and maintain instruments.
Career prospects:
- Technician in medical and bio-medical laboratories and Research Institutions,
- Instructor in Vocational Training Centres
Progression path:
- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
Entry Requirements
The Minimum Entry Requirements is a minimum of KCSE Mean Grade C (Plain) with the following cluster requirements:
- Minimum of C in either Maths or Physics
- Minimum of C in either English or Kiswahili
- Minimum of C in Biology
The duration for the course is two (2) years which includes a compulsory industrial attachment.
This program is examined by KNEC at the end of the two years training period.
Objectives of Medical Laboratory Technology
