The diploma in Teacher Education (DTE) is designed to produce teachers with an in-depth understanding of the subject matter, sound professional and managerial skills and ability to adapt to the ever-changing educational needs in Kenya. Its focus is on quality instruction and management of primary schools.
The two-year course leading to a Diploma in Teacher Education is aimed at improving the competency of primary school teachers in instruction and managerial skills which is presently largely lacking in public schools.
The course curriculum includes comprehensive training in languages, basic mathematics, children development, Human and child rights, psychology and administration geared towards the primary school curriculum delivery.
Entry Requirements
For sighted candidates:
- KCSE Mean Grade C+ (plus) or equivalent qualification approved by KNEC with
- C+ (plus) in the subject of specialization or equivalent qualification,
- C(plain) in English or equivalent for all applicants
- C(plain) in Mathematics for Science-based courses and
- D+ (plus) in Mathematics for humanities and creative arts courses.
For candidates with visual impairment:
- KCSE Mean grade C (plain) or equivalent qualification approved by KNEC with
- C (plain) in the subjects of specialization or equivalent qualification,
- C-(minus) in English or equivalent for all applicants,
- C- (minus) in Mathematics for Science-based courses and
- D (plain) in Mathematics for non-science based courses
Objectives of Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE)
The diploma in Primary Teacher Education is designed to produce teachers with an in-depth understanding of the subject matter, sound professional and managerial skills and ability to adapt to the ever-changing educational needs in Kenya. Its focus is on quality instruction and management of primary schools.
The specific objectives of the programme are to:
- Enhance the teacher subject content and pedagogical knowledge, skills and attitudes.
- Enhance teacher ability to handle two of the subject areas taught in primary schools, namely;
- Science, Agriculture, and Mathematics
- Social Studies and Languages .
- Develop a primary school teacher who is creative and capable of discovering, understanding, controlling and adapting to new technologies.
- Enable the primary school teacher to develop the child‟s ability in creative thinking, problem-solving and communication skills.
- Develop a teacher‟s awareness, understanding and commitment to professional ethics, basic human rights and sound environmental.
- Develop a teacher‟s capacity to produce and use relevant learning materials.
- Enhance a teacher‟s leadership and managerial skills.
- Prepare teachers for further Education and training.
What you will study
The course curriculum includes comprehensive training in languages, basic mathematics, children development, human and child rights, psychology and administration geared towards the primary school curriculum delivery.
In the first year of the course, students study the following subjects:
- Mathematics including aspects of Business Studies
- English including aspects of Library Science, Mother Tongue and Drama
- Kiswahili including aspects of Mother Tongue and Drama
- Science integrated with Home Science and Agriculture
- Religious Education (CRE / IRE)
- Social Studies including Home aspects of Business Studies
- Professional Studies including Special Needs Educations, Guidance & Counseling and legal issues in Education
- Creative Arts (Music, Art and Craft and Drama)
- Physical Education
- Information Communications Technology (ICT)
In the second year of the course, Students study nine subjects as follows;
- English
- Kiswahili
- Professional Studies
- Physical Education
- ICT
- Each student will then be required to choose four subjects from option A or B
