Chemical engineering is concerned with the manufacturing of chemicals on an industrial scale as well as the industrial processes that convert raw materials into products that have a higher economic value and in a particular manufacturing environment.
Chemical engineering is the discipline where sciences are combined with applied mathematics and engineering principles. It takes laboratory ideas and turns them into value-added products in cost-effective, safe and cutting-edge processes for the chemical industry.
This chemical engineering program deals with the application of chemical sciences in various streams of industry wherein the conversion from raw materials to newer transformed products take place. It is a comprehensive study of applying mathematics and economic calculations to analyze the possibilities in regulating the sector, developing refined products. Throughout the course, the students are trained to refine their communication and analytical skills in order to apply them in future endeavors.
The curriculum covers the program in detail through the study of the subject which includes applied chemistry, thermodynamics, chemical technology, heat transfer and much more giving a broader perspective of the field to the students. Candidates are taught the science of producing reformed items, recycling of older ones and reduction of pollution by using different methods for cleaning the waste left out by the industries.
By the completion of the program, candidates are trained in managing budgets, creating designs and getting a deeper insight into the industry. They can further opt for gaining bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering to widen their knowledge expertise.
After the completion of the course, candidates find job prospects in:
- environment sectors,
- production,
- research laboratories as well as
- petroleum refineries
Entry Requirements
The minimum entry requirements for the diploma in chemical engineering course are:-
- Pass in relevant Craft Course, or;
- KCSE Mean Grade C- (Minus), or;
- Equivalent qualification approved by KNEC.
Objectives of Chemical Engineering
Diploma in chemical engineering is a comprehensive study that brings together physical science (physics and chemistry) and life science (microbiology, biochemistry, and biology) applying together mathematics and economics in order to convert raw materials into newer products.
The program:
- enables the students to get an insight into the workings of the industry
- imparts knowledge of chemical science,
- exposes to students the application of chemical engineering tohuman science areas as well.
The overall goal of the program is to strengthen candidates' skills in communication and innovation, which can further help in opting for lucrative opportunities in the chemical engineering field.
