This Adherence Counselling course offers an opportunity for counselors engaged in HIV/AIDS work to enhance their skills in adherence counseling. The program spans five full-time days of classroom instruction, accommodating groups of up to twelve participants, each guided by two qualified adherence counseling trainers. Drawing on personal experiences, particularly from those immersed in the HIV/AIDS field, enriches the experiential learning process.
Content & Methodology:
The counseling model adopts Motivational Interviewing techniques and principles to facilitate behavioral change. Its overarching goal is to equip trainees with the necessary skills to motivate People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) undergoing Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) to adhere to their treatment regimen, ultimately leading to a reduction in viral loads to undetectable levels.
Course topics encompass fundamental adherence-related information, patient assessment, and readiness preparation for adherence, as well as pre- and post-treatment initiation counseling. Adherence counseling is recognized as integral to antiretroviral therapy, serving the dual purpose of evaluating patient readiness for treatment and monitoring ongoing adherence post-ART initiation. It is designed to optimize patient treatment success.
Practical adherence counseling skills are honed in small groups of three, providing ample opportunities for participants to learn and practice within Comprehensive Care Clinics or hospital settings, adhering to adherence counseling protocols.
Active participation from participants during the course fosters an environment conducive to understanding how adherence counseling theories translate into practice.
