Machinist (Turning and Milling) - Artisan

A machinist specialised in turning and milling technology manufactures production parts in various lot sizes using various machine tools. A machinist can also disassemble, reassemble and repair the machine tool as well as build new parts such as gears, splines, and shafts using various machine tools such as mills, lathes, grinders, and planers.

Milling is the process of machining using rotary cutters to remove material by advancing a cutter into a workpiece. This may be done varying direction on one or several axes, cutter head speed, and pressure. Milling covers a wide variety of different operations and machines, on scales from small individual parts to large, heavy-duty gang milling operations. It is one of the most commonly used processes for machining custom parts to precise tolerances.

Milling can be done with a wide range of machine tools. The original class of machine tools for milling was the milling machine (often called a mill).

This Machinist artisan certificate program trains students to:

  • Reading blueprints and
  • Performing precision measurement.
  • Set up and operate manual mills, lathes, and grinders.
  • Set up and operate computer numerical control (CNC) lathes and mills.
  • Maintain manual and CNC machines.
