Information is an important resource in the day-to-day operations of individuals, organizations and society. Owing to the fact that the world has evolved to an age where information technology and information explosions are here with us, there is a need for information professionals with higher and relevant qualifications and skills for libraries and other information centres. 

This Higher National Diploma in Library and Information Management programme focuses on the principles for the organisation, retrieval and accessibility of information and on the strategic management of information organisations, such as libraries, the information landscape, for example online and on the web, and on the development of library services of all kinds. 

On successful completion of the course, you will be ideally placed to pursue a career as an Information Professional. The increase in available digital information has led to a growing demand for professionals who have an understanding of information organisations, not limited to libraries but including industries of cultural heritage, research, publishing, broadcast and media, and employed to develop methods for storing, curating, accessing and using information in innovative ways and in future applications and services. 

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirements for the Higher National Diploma in Secretarial Management are:

  • Pass in Diploma Level
  • Degree from a recognized university;
  • Any other equivalent qualification as approved by KNEC.

Objectives of Library and Information Management

This Higher National Diploma in Library and Information Management programme aims to equip the students with appropriate technical and professional knowledge, skills and attitudes in Library and Information Studies. The specific objectives are:

  • To equip students with knowledge, skills and attitudes for the generation, organization, storage and dissemination of information in different types of information institutions and Information Technology required for libraries and other information centres;
  • To prepare students for a qualification sufficient to cater for the needs of staffing of libraries and other information centres;
  • To equip students with knowledge, skills and culture in international languages to enable them to be versatile in handling information globally.
  • To enhance the library and information knowledge and skills of those already practising.
