Mechanical fitters install, service and repair industrial machinery and equipment in a range of industries. some of these machinery include manufacturing equipment in factories and on production lines; transport equipment and machinery; office and laboratory equipment; aircraft maintenance equipment; as well as utilities and building services, such as lifts and escalators.
This mechanical general fitter artisan certificate course is designed to equip the trainee with the requisite knowledge in the assembly and fitting of machine parts and industrial equipment. It prepares students to work on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and computerised systems to guard against production delays or shut-down of systems.
Specific roles of a fitter include:
- installing pipework, valves, pumps, and motors
- carrying out planned maintenance checks
- finding and fixing faults
- replacing worn parts and re-setting instrument controls
- cleaning machinery
- responding to emergency breakdowns, for example on a factory production line
