Counseling Psychology is a specialty within professional psychology that maintains a focus on facilitating personal and interpersonal functioning across the life span.  The specialty pays particular attention to emotional, social, vocational, educational, health-related, developmental, and organizational concerns.

The Bachelor of Arts in Counseling Psychology (BACP) program introduces students to the core areas of Psychology, by exposing them to broad-based academic and experiential exposure to the science of behavior that guides the work of Counseling Psychologists. This program will enhance your understanding of human behavior, ability to administer the psychological assessment, facilitate behavior change and increase awareness of issues that will affect relationships.

The course is intense, practical, and covers a wide range of issues relevant to people such as marital problems, drug abuse, trauma counseling, grieve and loss, a teenage crisis among others. This means that after completion students are prepared to offer counseling services in various situations.

Bachelor of Arts In Counselling is intended for students who desire to serve the community by providing counseling services to individuals, couples, family relations, and counseling ministries, as well as small group facilitation and mediation skills.

This program is suitable for those who have a passion for helping people through the challenges of life or issues of mental health. It is recommended for individuals who already play the role of managing or counseling people and need to build on their practical knowledge and skills. High school graduates who have an interest in a career in psychology and counseling are invited to apply.

Entry Requirements

  • KCSE grade C+ with C- in English or its equivalents, Or
  • A level with two principal passes or its equivalents, Or
  • Diploma holders in related areas such as with at least a Credit Pass.

Objectives of Bachelor of Arts in Counselling Psychology

Bachelor of Arts in Counseling Psychology program will enhance students understanding of human behavior, ability to administer the psychological assessment, facilitate behavior change, and increase awareness of issues that will affect relationships.

To impart knowledge, skills, and values, through training Counseling psychologists who will be able to develop the necessary competencies to meet the growing needs of the society.

To prepare future generations for social, economic, religious, and political responsibilities in a fluid society by inculcating values, emotional dispositions, and behavior patterns that enhance their daily living.

To assist students in developing a base and working knowledge of the application of psychological, developmental, and mental health principles in a psychology-related practicum experience in the final year.

To enable students to leverage the principles and tenets of behavioral science and go on to work in a wide range of careers involving the rendering of therapeutic services to a variety of people at different levels after completing the dynamic core and elective courses.
