Typing clerks work in a variety of office environments including government, educational, and health care settings. A typing clerk must be able to type quickly and accurately using various data processing tools, such as computer word processing, writing and spreadsheet applications.

When processing and handling documents, a typing clerk must approach their work in an organized and detail-oriented fashion to prevent missed deadlines and spelling, grammar, punctuation, content, and document formatting errors.

A typing clerk must also have the ability to work well with others and communicate clearly, as she often must clarify information with co-workers and people outside the office.

Other duties of a clerk include:

  • Compiles data and operates typewriter or computer in performance of routine clerical duties to maintain business records and reports: Types reports, business correspondence, application forms, shipping tickets, and other material.
  • Files records and reports, posts information to records, sorts and distributes mail, answers telephone, and performs similar duties.
  • May compute amounts, using adding or calculating machine.
  • May type on or from specialized forms and be designated Guest-History Clerk; Storage-Receipt Poster.
  • May compile reports and type prescription data on labels in hospital pharmacy and be designated Dispensary Clerk.
  • May be designated: Collection-Card Clerk; Motor-Pool Clerk; Order Clerk; Policy-Issue Clerk.
  • May operate telex machine to produce records and reports.

  • Equivalent qualification approved by KNEC
