Severin Craftsman Training Centre

With five training workshops for craftsman professions, Severin Craftsman Training Centre is the right choice for interested young Kenyans seeking a well-founded apprenticeship. During training, we aim to teach less theoretical knowledge but more manual skills with an immediate benefit.

Severin Craftsman Training Centre is certificated by the Kenyan Technical, Vocational and Educational Training Authority (TVETA), and only trainers certified by TVETA and trained according to German industrial training standards are engaged. Besides theoretical courses, in two classrooms practical courses are held in cooperation with local crafts enterprises and hotels.

In Kenya, the resource education is a guarantor for social and national development. The Kenyan education system comprises of 8-years of primary education, 4 years of secondary education, and 4 years of university training.

For those who do not qualify to attend university, they have the option to attend technical institutions to learn craftsman trades. Children from humble backgrounds cannot afford to attend higher education. In most government schools classrooms tend to be overcrowded due to the high enrolment of students and there is a shortage of equipment and teachers. So, what about the children that would love to continue learning after secondary school but can?t afford continuative education? This is where we want to take up!

Why study at Severin Craftsman Training Centre

In cooperation with the German Association of International Cooperation (GIZ) and based on a develoPPP contract, Severin Craftsman Training Centre runs five training workshops for craftsman professions. The Training Center within the so-called Green Building is located on the premises of the 4-star hotel Severin Sea Lodge, Bamburi Beach, near Mombasa.

Severin Craftsman Training Centre aims to teach less of theoretical knowledge but more manual skills with an immediate benefit to the participants. In dependence on the dual education, craftsman courses for electricians, plumbers, masons, carpenters, and metalworkers are offered.

Severin Craftsman Training Centre offers apprenticeships similar to the German model (duales system). The focus is on practical training where the trainees work together with experienced craftsman in the maintenance departments of the Severin Sea Lodge, the neighboring amusement spot Mombasa Go-Kart and other affiliated hotels and enterprises. The practical training is accompanied by theoretical training in our classrooms.

The full training goes over 3 years. The first year is mainly in the workshops of our well-equipped training center while the following two years concentrate on fieldwork. We are licensed by the Kenyan Ministry of Educations as a TVET training center for vocational training and the training follows the Kenyan system of artisan grades. The trainees will go through the national (NITA) examinations Grade III, Grade II and Grade I, which is the highest grade.

The costs for the training are fully sponsored by Skills for Kenya and through a personal sponsorship program. It is at no costs for the trainees, which are mainly from a humble background of the neighboring villages that is also why lunch is provided in our canteen at no cost. In the second and third year, where the trainees work mainly productive on projects, we are able to offer a small apprentice salary.
