Mukuru Skills Training Centre(MUST) seeks to empower youths from ages 14 years {both boys and girls} and above by offering them employable skills initially in a 6-month hairdressing and beauty course, a one-year catering course, masonry and plumbing, Garment making, Early Childhood Development, and ICT. Short courses are also available for targeting young mothers.
At its inception in 2003, the project was meant to assist post-primary young people, young house girls, and jobless youths of Mukuru Slums to live in sustainable ways and gain practical skills, and access capital to initiate small businesses.
The project started with parents of St. Elizabeth Primary School in Lunga Lunga requesting a non-formal skills facility for their children. It has enabled youths to reduce idleness, nurture, and encourage positive attributes, access employment, and start small businesses.
The Center offers lessons on personal health and life skills to youths. These include personal hygiene & care, home management & childcare, environmental care, recycling of materials, and agriculture as elements of each course.
The Center works with owners and managers of businesses to assist provide placements for students hence realizing 90% rate on job transition. Every year the Center graduates over 200.
