Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a public university near Meru, Kenya, whose guiding philosophy is self-reliance and self-actualization for all.
In order to develop these values, MUST students are taken through experiential learning which involves complementing class lectures with the provision of a favorable environment for exploration and expression of individual talents.
In Meru University of Science and Technology, experiential learning is supported by modern laboratory facilities shared by all programs that need them, a large demonstration farm for various types of crops, provision of a variety of on-farm livestock species including dairy and beef cattle, and facilities for aquaculture (fishponds) and apiculture (beehives). Meru University of Science and Technology - History
The history of Meru University of Science and Technology goes back to 1960s when the Ameru leaders led by the Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders of Meru conceived the idea of establishing an institution of Higher Learning, consequently, the community set aside some 641 acres of land near the Njuri Ncheke Shrine at Nchiru for the said institution of Higher Learning.
Thereafter, the leaders mobilized the Community to raise funds and other resources to start the College and thus Meru College of Technology (MECOTECH) was started which admitted its first students in 1983 to pursue various Diploma and Certificates Courses in Agriculture, Motor Vehicle Engineering, Building and Construction Management, IT, Business Administration, Electrical Engineering and Masonry among other programmes.
On 1st July 2008, through a legal notice, Meru College of Science and Technology was established as a Constituent College of JKUAT, and became fully fledged University on 1st March 2013. To replace MECOTECH, the Government has put up a Modern Technical Institute at Karumo, Athwana -Tigania West to provide basic Technical Skills for students who do not make it to the University.
According to the charter establishing MUST, the mandate of the University is to provide educational opportunities for Kenyans in the fields of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Public Health, Biological Sciences, Agriculture, Physical Sciences, Mining, Energy, Water, Education, Forestry, Engineering and Technology among others.
