Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), formerly Western University College of Science and Technology, is a public university located in Kakamega town, Kenya.
MMUST holds the view that science and technology is an indispensable tool in harnessing resources of nature for sustainable development and creating an environment in which human beings can survive and realize their potential. Thus, the human person has the moral obligation to creatively improve the environment. This can be achieved through a well-conceptualized educational, scientific and technological package through which every human being must rightfully experience and acquire the tools to facilitate this mission.

The school was established in January 1972, known as Western College or WECO, a college of Arts and Applied Sciences awarding certificates and diplomas in technical courses.
In 2002 it became a constituent college of Moi University and changed its name to Western University College of Science and Technology. The university is open to the community to use its resources e.g. the library and other facilities.
MMUST became a fully accredited public university in 2007. Before being elevated to full university status, it was a constituent college of Moi University.

MMUST main campus in Kenya is located 1 Km from Kakamega Central Business District (Kakamega CBD) on the Kakamega Webuye Road. The institution is located 42 Km from Webuye and 58 Km from Kisumu city in Kenya.

Postgraduate studies at MMUST is done within the standard and completed in time. The university has set up the Directorate of Postgraduate Studies (DPS) and the Directorate of Research and Postgraduate Support (DRPS). Through these directorates, postgraduate students receive all the necessary assistance in their studies which enables them to finish their studies in time.
Flexible Modes of Learning
The university has put in place an all accommodating mode of learning. At MMUST, there are normal regular week day classes for undergraduate students, there is weekend classes for working staff and Online and Distance E-learning for those far away from the university.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology - History
Masinde Muliro University was founded through Harambee spirit on 5th January 1972, as Western College of Arts and Applied Sciences (WECO) under the stewardship of .the former fiery MP, Masinde Muliro. As chairman of the project executive committee, Muliro worked with Prof. Reuben J. Olembo (then Head, Department of Botany University of Nairobi) as secretary.
The establishment of the College was in response to the needs of the people of Western province to have a College that would provide a training ground for technical manpower requirements for the province and the nation. The College was also expected to inculcate a sense of self-help and self-reliance among its students and facilitate the active participation of youth in national development.
The first batch of 24 students who were drawn from all parts of the country, joined on March 24, 1977, and enrolled for certificate and diploma in courses, which included mechanical and motor vehicle, electrical, electronic, agriculture, water, building, architecture, accounting, FINANCE etc. In December 2002, WECO became WUCST (Western University College of Science and Technology) after being elevated to a Constituent College of Moi University. Early 2007, President Kibaki elevated WUCST to a full university by assenting to a Bill that also changed the name to Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
