Course Overview

The Master of Arts Design Degree programme at the University of Nairobi, emphasizes research to extend the boundary knowledge, to acquire professional skills and to address unmet needs. The Master of Arts Design Degree programme at the University of Nairobi strives to address local, national, regional, and international challenges. The Master of Arts Design Degree programme at the University of Nairobi also lays emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration, concerns for the disadvantaged and national development goals.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Admission to the Master of Arts in Design at the University of Nairobi is open to holders of Bachelor's degree in:
Design, of at least Upper Second Class Honours, of the University of Nairobi or an equivalent qualification recognised by the University of Nairobi Senate;
Any discipline related to Design, of at least Upper Second Class Honours from the University of Nairobi or other Universities recognised by the University of Nairobi Senate;
Design or a discipline related to Design of at least Lower Second Class Honours with at least three years of professional experience and a certified portfolio.

Transfer of Credits
Applicants may transfer credits for similar courses, at Master's level, taken in other institutions recognised by the University of Nairobi Senate.
Applicant seeking transfer of credit may:-
Send a formal application seeking transfer of credits, justification of the request and attach evidence of the credentials which would support such a request.
Apply for transfer of credit which is processed only after paying the prescribed exemption fee;
Be allowed a maximum of one third of the courses.

Course Objectives

The Master of Arts Design Degree programme at the University of Nairobi enables students to accurately translate cultural, social economic and intellectual concerns into successful concepts and designs.
The Master of Arts Design Degree programme at the University of Nairobi sharpens students ability to assess design challenges which are experienced locally, nationally.

Course Program

The Master of Art in Design course at the University of Nairobi shall comprise of :-
Lectures, Tutorials, practicals (studio courses), design and research projects.
Seven compulsory courses, six of which are taken at level one and one is taken at level three.
Five areas of specialisation Graphic, Textiles and Fashion, Interior, Product, Appreciation; specialisation starts at level two and continues to level four:
One design or research project, taken at levels three and four.

During the first Level of study of the Master of Arts in design course at the University of Nairobi, the following units shall be studied:
Research Methodology, Design Management, History of Design, East African Design, Computer Aided Design, Design Materials and Process
During the second Level of study of the Master of Arts in design course at the University of Nairobi, the following a student shall pick one specific area of specialisation:

Graphic Design - Advertising Design, Packaging Design, Corporate Identity Design, Publication Design.
Textile and Fashion Design Printed Textile Design, Woven Textiles Design, Fashion Design, Fabric Craft and Design.
Interior Design Principles of Landscape Design, Interior Space Design, Exhibition and Display Design, Furnishing Design.
Product Design Jewellery Design, Household Product Design, Leisure Product Design, Furniture Design.
Design Appreciation
West and North African Design, European American Design, Oriental Design, Design Practice.

During the third Level of study of the Master of Arts in design course at the University of Nairobi, the following units shall be studied:
Contemporary Design Issues, Design Project, Research Project

During the first Level of study of the Master of Arts in design course at the University of Nairobi, the following units shall be studied:
Research Project II, Research Project III
