Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Research Methodology Program Offered at University of Nairobi

Good and quality research outcomes require building capacity by increasing the number of researchers through appropriate training. The Research Methodology course at the University of Nairobi will meet the training needs of those involved or interested in quality biomedical and operational research. It builds on principles of epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics and social sciences.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Research Methodology      course at the University of Nairobi targets graduates in biological disciplines, veterinary science, medicine and social sciences who intend to pursue research activities at various levels including higher degree programmes (MSc. and PhD.) in tertiary institutions.

   Organize, present,interpret and utilize research data for decision making and policy formulation.

   Utilize qualitative approaches in policy analysis and data gathering.

   Utilize operations research methods and study designs.

   Utilize concepts of economics and management in the health sector.

   Utilize the computer in communication, analysis of data and preparing reports and presentations.

   Conduct appropriate literature search and handle references.

   Demonstrate ability to read,write and make research presentations.

The minimum requirements for eligibility into the Postgraduate Diploma in Research Methodology are:

1. 
   

   Holders of Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery, Veterinary Medicine,Dental Sciences, Nursing Sciences and Pharmacy from the University of Nairobi.

   
   
2. 
   

   Holders of at least bachelors degree lower second class honours in Biological, and Social Sciences from the University of Nairobi;

   
   
3. 
   

   Holders of a pass degree in the areas specified in bullet 2 plus at least two years of research/work experience.

   
   
4. 
   

   Any other equivalent qualifications to the above from institutions recognized by the Senate.

Transfer of Credits/Exemptions

A candidate may exempted from some course units from institutions recognised by the Senate, subject to the following conditions:

1. 
   

   Must have passed in similar course units at Postgraduate Diploma level.

   
   
2. 
   

   Request for exemption should be made in writing, on admission, addressed to the Director of Board of Postgraduate Studies, through Director, Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases and should be accompanied by officially endorsed supporting documents for the relevant course.

   
   
3. 
   

   Payment of the prescribed exemption fees.

   
   
4. 
   

   No candidate shall be exempted for more than one third of the total number of units required in the course.

   The postgraduate Diploma Course in Research Methodology at the University of Nairobi shall cover up to a minimum of 2 semesters and a maximum of 6 semesters of 15 weeks each.

   The course will be conducted through lectures, seminars, practicals and tutorials.

   
   
3. 
   

   The course shall consist of nine core units and a research project.

   
   
4. 
   

   Students will be required to take a minimum of three courses per semester.
