About Master of Science in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Masters program.

The Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology programme at the University of Nairobi is a three year programme that include course work, examination and thesis.


The objective of the course is to prepare graduates to practice Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Specialist level. Other optional outcomes include teaching and research in reproductive health. The basis qualification is a Masters in Obstetrics and Gynaecology


Admission is competitive and requires that the applicants possess a basic degree in Medicine, MBCHB, or its equivalent, and at least two years of clinical exposure and practice after internship. Specific considerations include acceptable academic transcript for the basic degree and passing a competitive interview, which consists of MCQ and oral examination. In addition, good recommendation of behaviour, academic drive and inclination towards research are added advantage.

Master of Science in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Course Subjects

 

The course has three levels;


level i :


During this first year ,the students are taught the following:




  1. Biostatistics and Epidemiology



  2. Basic sciences-"The scientific basis of Obstetrics and Gynaecology"


This leads to Master of Medicine, MMED, Examinations part i, which are marked as follows:






      1. countinuous assessment 30%.



      2. End year examinations: 70%.



          Written paper (3 hrs).


          Multiple choice: (3 hrs).


The students are also exposed to clinical duties.




Level ii The Elective Term


This is a one year term, during which the student is exposed to areas outside but relevant to the practice of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The elective term is structured in order to maximize on acquisition of the desired experiences.




During the year, the student may elect to gunner experiences in the following areas:




  1. Four months rotation in either of the following surgical specialities.



      a) General Surgery or


      b) Surgical Urology.



  2. Two months rotations in 4 of the following special areas:



      a) Laboratory


      b) Reproductive heath imaging





  1. Two months rotations in 4 of the following special areas:


a)Laboratory


b) Reproductive heath imagin


c)Chemotherapy.


d)Neomatology


e)Critical care Medicine


f) Community Obstetrics


g) Urogynaecolgy


h)Assisted Reproductive Techniques


i) Obstetrics/Gynaecology rotation in a provincial hospital or equivalent




The student is also expected to collect and analyse data on the research project.


Level III: Final year


This year ends with sitting for the MMED II examinations, which are the qualifying examinations for Masters of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (MMED Obs/Gyn). Great emphasis is laid on mastering of clinical practice based on well researched knowledge in order to practice evidence based medicine in accordance to international standards. The examinations are based on the following:


i)Continuous Assessment Tests(CATs): 30%


a) Logbook


b) Presentations


c) Research Project


ii)Final Examinations (70%)


a) Written Obstetrics (3 hours)


b) Written Gynaecology (3 hours)


c) Clinical Obstetrics (0.5 hours)


d) Clinical Gynaecology (0.5 hours)


e) Oral examination (0.25 hours)
