Master of Pharmacy in Clinical Pharmacy Program Offered at University of Nairobi

Pharmacy services in recent years have expanded significantly beyond drug preparation and distribution. These evolutionary changes are expressed as greater involvement by pharmacists in drug related decision making and patient care activities.

The World Health Organization though the concept of pharmaceutical care sees a pharmacist as an integral member of the patient care team.

The discipline of clinical pharmacy is responsible for ensuring the safe, appropriate, and coat-effective use of drugs in patients, through the application of specialized skills and knowledge.

The Master of Pharmacy in Clinical Pharmacy programme aims at instilling knowledge and skills that will enhance the provision of pharmaceutical care at patient level.

The objective of the Master of Pharmacy in Clinical Pharmacy course at the University of Nairobi is to produce a professional with sufficient knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to:-

Integrate knowledge of the biological, biomedical, and pharmaceutical sciences with clinical information to make decisions regarding rational drug therapy.

Assess patients in order to monitor, evaluate, design, recommend and implement patient specific pharmaco-therapeutic plans

   Holders of Bachelor of pharmacy degree of the University of Nairobi or any other equivalent degree from an institution recognized by University Nairobi Senate.

   The degree should be registrable by the Pharmacy Poisons Board of Kenya.

   The Master of Pharmacy in Clinical Pharmacy programme shall run over a minimum of four semesters and a maximum of ten semesters of fifteen weeks each.

   The Course shall consist of two parts. Part I shall be devoted to course work and exposure to clinical areas in order to correlate course work to to practical application. Part II shall consist of clinical training in the selected electives and research project.

   The Coursework shall comprise of: Lectures, tutorials, clinical experience, demonstrations and seminars. The research will run concurrently with clinical work and shall be undertaken only after successful completion of coursework.

   The programme shall consist of core courses, major electives, minor electives and dissertation. Each candidate will be required to take nine core courses, one major elective, in addition to the dissertation.

Clinical Pharmacy and Patient Health Assessment, Pathophysiology, Biopharmaceutics and Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Drug Information and Health Care Management, Advanced Therapeutics I, Advanced Therapeutics II, Analytical Methods in Clinical Pharmacy, Clinical Toxicology, Research Methodology and Biostatistics.

Major Electives

Pharmaceutical Care in Internal Medicine, Paediatric Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical care of surgical patients, Obstetric and Gynaecologic Pharmacy.

Minor Electives

Oral Health Pharmacy, Mental health and Psychiatric Pharmacy, Emergency and Critical Care, Pharmacy Practice in Oncology, Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy, Dissertation.
