Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics Program Offered at University of Nairobi

The Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics discipline at the University of Nairobi deals with the provision and maintenance of prostheses and /or restoration of teeth to function, aesthetic harmony and comfort utilizing a variety of techniques both direct and indirect while using the appropriate dental materials.

The Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics discipline at the University of Nairobi also encompasses patients evaluation, diagnosis and treatment planning which includes prevention and disease control as well as the requirement of long term maintenance of restored dentition.

In provision of dental prostheses, they are fixed to the remaining tooth/teeth analog such as implant or removable partial or complete dentures supported by teeth and soft tissues.

These prostheses replace missing and associated hard tissue. They also replace soft tissue defects resulting from pathology, trauma or congenital defects. Dental caries and periodontal diseases are currently the most prevalent oral diseases which manifest as partial or total loss of teeth and their supporting periodontal structures requiring one or more forms of prosthodontic management ranging from simple to complex restorations and/or prostheses.

The purpose therefore of the Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics discipline at the University of Nairobi shall be to procure high calibre graduates who are capable of maintaining the practice of Prosthodontics in scientific research and in clinical practice.

The objectives of Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics discipline at the University of Nairobi are:

  Provide the MDS prosthodontics candidates with comprehensive knowledge and skills in the practice of prosthodontics.

  Provide sound experience in management of patients requiring oral rehabilitation with restorations, fixed and/or removable prostheses.

  Enhance the fortification of the interdisciplinary management of prosthodontics and other dental disciplines.

  
  
• 
  

  Train the MDS Prosthodontics graduate in research skills thus enabling them to undertake independent and original research project.

To qualify for admission to the Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics discipline at the University of Nairobi a candidate need to meet the following requirements

  The candidates shall be holders of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of Nairobi or its equivalent from an institution approved by the University of Nairobi Senate.

  The applicants shall be registrable by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.

  
  
• 
  

  The candidates shall have at least two years working experience in clinical dentistry one of which should have been post intern-ship.

Transfer of credits

Common regulations for credit transfer of the University of Nairobi shall apply.

Students who wish to transfer course work credits for similar courses taken in other institutions recognized by the Senate of University of Nairobi may, on recommendation of the school board and the Board of Postgraduate Studies, be allowed to transfer credits for up to one third of the total number of courses offered in the Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics programme at the University of Nairobi, provided the following conditions are fulfilled:

  The applicant shall submit formal application(s) seeking transfer of credit(s) to the Director Board of Postgraduate Studies, through the Dean, School of Dental sciences.

  The course shall have been assessed to have similar content and contact hours equivalent to the one the credit transfer is desired. Evidence of course content and contact hours shall be attached to the application.

  
  
• 
  

  The applicant must have passed the relevant courses at Masters Degree Level.

  
  
• 
  

  The transfer of credit shall be allowed only in non-clinical course(s) in the first year.

  
  
• 
  

  Transfer of credit shall not be allowed in the research work and the subsequent thesis.

The Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics course at the University of Nairobi shall be divided into three examinable parts. Part I, II, and III University Examinations shall be administered in the first, second and third year respectively. Part three examinations shall also include defence of the thesis.

The Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics course at the University of Nairobi shall be conducted through lectures, seminars, phantom head and laboratory practicals, clinical practice and tutorials.

Each Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics candidate at the University of Nairobi shall be expected to undertake a research project relevant to prosthodontics leading to a thesis.

The first academic year of study at the University of Nairobi shall be by course work, practical, clinical management of patients, continuous assessment tests and preparation of a research proposal.

The second year of study at the University of Nairobi shall comprise of course work, practical, clinical management of patients requiring advanced prosthodontic prostheses, laboratory practicals, seminars, clinical case presentation, continuous assessment tests and the commencement of research for the thesis.

The third year of study at the University of Nairobi shall comprise of clinical management of cases, design and fabrication of more advanced prosthodontic appliances, introduction to practices management, completion of the research and defence.
