BSc Economics and Statistics Program Offered at Egerton University

The B.Sc. in Economics and Statistics programme enables students to describe, compare and correlate the important Economics phenomena of production, consumption, exchange and distribution with the help of Statistics. Mathematics and its offspring, statistics and accounting are powerful instruments, which the modern economist has at his/her disposal and of which business is making increased use. Graduates of this programme will be in high demand in the public and private sectors. This is market-driven programme.

The main objective of the B.Sc. Economics and Statistics programme at Egerton University is to provide students with thorough understanding of the theories, principles and analytical techniques in the economics and statistics disciplines as taught worldwide.
The specific objectives of the programme will be to:

• Equip students with relatively advanced analytical skills in Economics and statistics;
• Provide students with skills for careers in the public and private sectors;
• Equip students with skills for job opportunities in research institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs);
• Prepare students for post-graduate study in either of the two fields.

Applicants to B.Sc. in Economics and Statistics programme at Egerton University must satisfy the minimum entry requirements for admission into the University.

In addition, applicants must have at least the grade of B minus (B-) in Mathematics, or C+ in Mathematics and B in Economics/Commerce/Accounting/ Business studies.

Holders of A- level qualifications with two principal passes in Economics or Mathematics will be considered.

Mininum Entry Requirements for Bachelor's Degree at Egerton University
The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must:

• Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

• Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
• Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

• Egerton University Statutes 2008 43
• Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher.

OR

• Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent
• Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

AND
Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.

To be admitted for a PRE-SERVICE DEGREE PROGRAM, a prospective candidate must have all the requirements set up by the joint Admission Board (JAB), with a prospective IN-SERVICE student must have completed a diplomaprogram in the relevant field and graduated with at least a CREDIT.

This  BSc( Economics and Statistics) degree programme at Egerton University extends over four academic years. Every academic year consists of two semesters of seventeen weeks, the last two weeks being devoted to examinations. There is, therefore, a total of 8 semesters during the four-year period of study. The weighting of courses if in terms of semester units where semester units is equivalent to 45 lecture hours.
The B.Sc. Economics and Statistics requires the student to complete a minimum of 48 courses, at least 20 in economics and a minimum of 18 in statistics. The student, by consent of the department, shall then be required to take at least 9 non-economics units of heir own choice, from the options available during the duration of study.
Elective courses are offered only in the third and fourth years of study. They are selected by students during each semester and are aimed at enabling the student to specialize in a particular area. The specialization area selected and the related electives must be adhered to throughout the two-year period.
Each 3.0 CF course will take a minimum of 45 contact hours per semester and each will be examined for two hours.
