Agriculture contributes about 26% directly and 27% indirectly to Kenya‟s GDP and provides income to over 70% of Kenyans. Modern agriculture is complex and only individuals who have gone through an extended period of preparation in agriculture can effectively participate and contribute in it. The data justifies investment in school and tertiary level Education in agriculture.

The philosophical basis of the degree programme in agricultural Education and extension at Egerton University is the need to produce a critical mass of producers and manpower needed for research, extension and management in agriculture.

The Bachelor of Science degree programme prepares the manpower essential for school agriculture, agricultural extension and rural development. The graduates are also sufficiently qualified to assume responsibilities in the private sector and set up their own businesses.

Objectives of BSc. Agricultural Education and Extension

The primary aim of this degree programme in agricultural education and extension at Egerton University is to prepare graduates with appropriate technical and professional competencies in agriculture, biology and extension Education. The specific objectives are to enable graduates:

  1. Plan and teach agriculture and biology in secondary schools, teacher training colleges, and agricultural institutions;
  2. Develop, implement and evaluate agricultural Education programmes;
  3. Plan, implement and evaluate agricultural extension and rural development programmes; Manage Educational and agricultural organizations;
  4. Design and conduct research in agricultural Education and agricultural extension;
  5. Develop and conduct training in agricultural extension and;
  6. Pursue further Education in agriculture, agricultural Education or extension.

Entry requirements for BSc. Agricultural Education and Extension

Egerton University rules and regulations for admission into undergraduate studies shall apply.
In addition a candidate must have passed KCSE or an equivalent examination in the following subjects at minimum grades indicated:

  • Agriculture or Biology B-
  • Chemistry B-
  • Mathematics C+
  • Physics or Geography C+
  • Biological Sciences B
  • Physical Sciences B

OR
A holder of a diploma with credit or above in Agricultural Education or related field from a college or University recognized by Egerton University.

Mininum Entry Requirements for Bachelor's Degree
The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must:

  • Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

  • Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

  • Egerton University Statutes 2008 43
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher.

OR

  • Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent
  • Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

AND
Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.

To be admitted for a PRE-SERVICE DEGREE PROGRAM, a prospective candidate must have all the requirements set up by the joint Admission Board (JAB), with a prospective IN-SERVICE student must have completed a diplomaprogram in the relevant field and graduated with at least a CREDIT.

BSc. Agricultural Education and Extension Course Subjects

The programme shall extend for a period of four academic years. Each academic year shall consist of two semesters, each comprising of 17 weeks.
Diploma holders may be allowed to transfer courses towards the degree programme.
Diploma holders who qualify for credit transfer may take not less than two and half academic years. The Department and Senate will determine courses for which credit transfer is allowed. Credit transfers can be offered to a maximum of 30 percent of credit factors for the programme. Teaching Practice and Field Attachment will be conducted for 12 weeks and 8 weeks at the end of the third and fourth year of study, respectively.
