The main purpose of introducing this programme is to facilitate possible upgrading of holders of the Diploma in Engineering to a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering level focussing on those areas relevant to the local industry. As a technology degree, it builds on the practically oriented training at diploma level. The curriculum for the degree of Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering is therefore designed to produce graduates with sufficient theoretical knowledge, design skills and practical experience that will enable them fit into any area of Civil Engineering practice.
The programme aims at giving a chance to already trained graduates from tertiary institutions to further their studies. Qualified and Practising Technician Engineers who are holders of Diploma in Engineering or its equivalent will be trained to a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Technology level so that they can be considered for registration as Professional Engineers by the Engineers Registration Board (ERB).
The cornerstone of the programme is the deliberate emphasis placed on computer applications in solving engineering problems and the possibility of Electives for specialization.
The Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering programme targets diploma holders from recognized middle level colleges who will be upgraded to degree level.
Such graduates will be better placed for the competitive job market by combining hands on experience which is normally emphasised at diploma level.
The Course will also provide a missing link between Masters Programmes in Engineering and Diploma Programmes. It will facilitate possible upgrading and hence a route/pre-requisite for admission to relevant Masters programmes for the Diploma holders in Engineering related areas.
The programme creates opportunity for specialisation in the following areas of the Civil engineering discipline:
- Environmental Engineering
- Water Resources Engineering
- Structural Engineering
- Construction Engineering and Management
- Geotechnical and Highway Engineering
