About Bachelor of Science in Nuesing, Diploma upgrade Bachelors Degree program.

The course is designed to upgrade the registered Nurse diploma holder, to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc N) level with the aim of enabling her/him to develop in-depth understanding of emerging and advanced issues in the nursing profession. The dynamic nature of health care requires nursing with sound scientific base, managerial and research skills. These competencies coupled with creativity, critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills are essential for effective health care delivery in settings.



Justification


The diploma programme for Registered Nurses covers a total of 4664 hours out of which 3516 are spent in acquiring laboratory and clinical skills in hospitals and community heath settings through an apprentice system. The major competency gaps and short falls in scope and depth that the upgrading programme aims to bridge include biological, social and nursing theoretical bases. Other areas not fully covered are critical thinking, clinical reasoning, professional judgement and informed decision making which are essential for effective practice.




The proposed syllabus will therefore enhance the nurses critical understanding of emerging concepts,principles and theories related to health care delivery and nursing practice.

Objectives of Bachelor of Science in Nuesing, Diploma upgrade


The general objectives for the Upgrading Diploma Level Nurses to the Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSc N), degree programme at the University of Nairobi are to:


Provide the learner with basis developing scientific knowledge, skills and techniques which facilitate in-depth understanding of both current and emerging issues related to nursing practice and health care delivery system in general.


Ensure that the learner acquires appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes so as to be able to;






      1. Recognize the physical ,social and psychological factors inherent in illness and their effect on the patient/client, family and the community.



      2. Plan, direct, provide, co-ordinate and evaluate nursing care based on understanding of scientific principles.



      3. Identify patient/client, family and community needs.



      4. Demonstrate clinical competence in areas of nursing.



      5. Evaluate his/her knowledge and performance in the light of changing health and nursing trends.



      6. Develop and implement relevant educational and community health programmes.



      7. Demonstrate an educational basis upon which postgraduate studies for further studies for further specialization as clinician, educator, administrator or researcher in nursing may be built.



      8. Conduct research in nursing and public findings

Entry requirements for Bachelor of Science in Nuesing, Diploma upgrade

Candidates for admission into the programme must be: a registered nurse, holders of a Diploma in Nursing from a recognised institution in Kenya, and a minimum of C plain in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent and a pass in English.


Credit Transfer/Exceptions.


The common regulations governing credit transfer for the University of Nairobi shall apply.


The criterion for admission is flexible in terms of credit transfers and exemptions depending on the applicants qualification at the time of admission. A candidate who wishes to be exempted from a course unit shall follow the procedures set below:




  1. The applicant shall be required at the discretion of the Senate to send formal application of exemption to Dean, through the Chairman of the Department where exemption is sought.



  2. The application shall be made on prescribed form with justification and documentary evidence to support such a request.



  3. The applicant may be required to sit an exemption examination set and administered by the respective department on behalf of the School Board and the Senate.



  4. The candidate must have attained a pass mark in the course units for which exemption is sought.



  5. The applicants shall pay a non refundable exemption fee as may be determined by the School board and approved by Senate.



  6. Exemptions or credit transfers shall be allowed in any professional/clinical courses.


Bachelor of Science in Nuesing, Diploma upgrade Course Subjects

The course structure leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing shall extend over a period of 3 yrs which is 12 quarters of 11 weeks each, a total 132 weeks which translates to 67 units or 3015 contact hours. It will be offered on a full time mode.


A unit is defined as 45 contact hours.


Except in special cases approved by senate on the recommendation of the school board, candidates shall enrol in each level for all the subjects of that level.


All nursing courses shall include intensive experiences in both theory and practice.


Candidates shall present themselves for University Examinations at the end of each level of study or at such times as the school board and college academic board may determine with approval of senate.


Candidates must pass in all prescribed course for a level before proceeding to the next level.
