Justification
The diploma programme for Registered Nurses covers a total of 4664 hours out of which 3516 are spent in acquiring laboratory and clinical skills in hospitals and community heath settings through an apprentice system. The major competency gaps and short falls in scope and depth that the upgrading programme aims to bridge include biological, social and nursing theoretical bases. Other areas not fully covered are critical thinking, clinical reasoning, professional judgement and informed decision making which are essential for effective practice.
The proposed syllabus will therefore enhance the nurses critical understanding of emerging concepts, principles and theories related to health care delivery and nursing practice.
