Objectives of Bachelor of Science in Horticulture

Upon successful completion of this programme the graduate will be able to demonstrate:

  • A comprehensive knowledge of the principles of Horticultural science and business theory, concepts and methods pertaining to the development, support and maintenance of an Horticulture related business meeting appropriate industry standards and regulations.
  • Familiarity with and ability to critique current theory in the field of horticulture and the ability to integrate theory with practical skills using critical thinking and problem solving.
  • The ability to investigate and analyse complex horticultural problems from various domains, design appropriate solutions and implement the solution to agreed standards including for example environmental impact. Use effective oral and written communication skills necessary to construct, evaluate and present solutions.
  • The ability to act as a team leader, analyse complex problems and apply creativity in designing and implementing solutions, while exercising appropriate judgement in an Horticultural Business environment.
  • The ability to coordinate and supervise the development of a horticulture related business and maintenance of its activities meeting industry norms and standards, while considering a range of management option and analysis tools.
  • The ability to work ethically and professionally as an individual or within a team with a capacity for leadership, exercising responsibility and good judgement; plan and manage a project from initiation to handover.
  • The ability to exploit available resources and undertake appropriate research for self learning, critically approach academic literature and other sources of information to learn from experience and to identify his/her need for further skill or educational development.
  • The ability to articulate the wider social, political and business contexts within which the horticulture professional operates and the need for high ethical and professional standards in one's work and in particular towards people and the environment.

Entry requirements for Bachelor of Science in Horticulture

The minimum entry requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Horticulture degree program at Pwani University are:

  • A mean grade of at least C+ (plus) or its equivalent in KCSE, and depending on the degree cluster at least C+ in three of the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Agriculture, Geography, Home Science, Computer Studies, Commerce and Economics. OR
  • A-level certificate with at least one principal in the subjects indicated above. OR
  • Diploma with a minimum of Credit Pass in related field of study from a recognized institution.
