The Bachelor of Laws degree at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology(JKUAT) curriculum includes a skills component which teaches students generic practical skills such as problem-solving, analysis, research and practical legal skills such as legal writing, drafting and argumentation.

Law students are required to make constructive use of the knowledge and skills they acquire by contributing to national development and the community through legal aid, community service, street law and similar outreach activities

Objectives of Bachelor of law

The Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree program at Jomo Kenyatta University provides students with a sound knowledge of the principles of the Kenyan, regional and international legal systems. Graduates are empowered to critically assess, interpret and apply the law with a historical, comparative and jurisprudential background that is essential for a thorough and critical understanding of law and legal institutions.

Bachelor of Laws degree at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology(JKUAT) has the following objectives;

  • Prepare students with the knowledge, skills and other competences to enable them provide legal services nationally, regionally, and globally.
  • Intellectually prepare students to appreciate the role of law in development from national, regional and international perspectives.
  • Inculcate in students the values of professionalism, social justice and community service.
  • Integrate studies in science and technology, including information technology, in legal education.
  • Promote the stated goals, vision, mission and philosophy of JKUAT.
  • Deepen the understanding of national and international law, and how both regimes relate to each other.
  • To provide students with legal knowledge and skills relevant in the fields of Agriculture, Engineering, Technology, Enterprise Development, Built Environment, Health Sciences and other Applied Sciences.

Entry requirements for Bachelor of law

To be eligible for admission into Bachelor of Laws degree at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology(JKUAT), a Candidate must satisfy the following academic qualifications:

  • Be a holder of a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.) (or equivalent certificate) with a mean grade of at least a C+ (C Plus) or equivalent qualification, OR
  • Be a holder of a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.) (or equivalent certificate) with a mean grade of C (C Plain) or equivalent qualification and a distinction or credit pass in a relevant diploma lasting at least two taught years from an institution recognised by the JKUAT Senate and accredited to offer diploma, OR
  • Be a holder of a Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (K.A.C.E) with at least two principal passes (Principal A, B or C) or equivalent qualification as determined by the JKUAT Senate, OR
  • Be a holder of a degree or degrees from a recognized University, AND
  • Must have at least grade B (B Plain) in English at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education or equivalent qualification.

Bachelor of law Course Subjects

Bachelor of Laws degree at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology(JKUAT) has the following course program;

  • The Bachelor of Laws programme lasts for a minimum period of FOUR (4) academic years comprising EIGHT (8) semesters of full-time attendance of lectures offered by the School of Law.
  • To qualify for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of Laws, a candidate is required to complete the course of study for a period of not less than FOUR academic years and not more than SIX academic years.
  • The Bachelor of Laws programme consists of fifty six (56) course units; each course unit being equivalent to 3 credit hours a week.
  • In each academic year, a student takes a total of fourteen (14) course units divided into seven (7) course units per semester.
