The Bachelor of Education (Science) programme prepares qualified science teachers for secondary schools, colleges and tertiary institutions. There is need to replace retiring teachers and fill the gap due to natural attrition. That the Secondary Education will be subsidised by the government, the increased enrolment will demand greater number of teachers. That is the more why this programme important.

Objectives of Bachelor of Education (Science)

The general objectives of theBachelor of Education (Science) programme at Egerton University are:

  1. To prepare teacher for an active career in all facets of professional Education;
  2. To develop the intellectual, professional and social characteristics of teachers to enable them to become responsible leaders within the school and the community;
  3. To develop the capacity of the teachers so that they should be able to
  4. teach effectively at the secondary school, colleges and tertiary levels;
  5. Identify research problems and design appropriate procedures for investigating and analysing them;
  6. To provide a basis for science Education training that enables the teachers to pursue advanced training in both professional and academic areas.

Entry requirements for Bachelor of Education (Science)

Candidates admitted to the Degree of Bachelor of Education (Science) at Egerton University must satisfy the minimum entrance requirements of the Egerton University.

They must also satisfy departmental requirements before registering for courses in the respective departments. In satisfying the minimum entrance requirements of the University, candidates must have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with the minimum grades against each subject as indicated below:

  • C+ in Mathematics
  • C+ in any of the following:
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Biology
    • Geography

or

  • B- in any of the following subjects:
    • Physical Sciences
    • Biological sciences

Alternatively, admission may be granted to holders of Diploma/S1 certificate in science Education from Institutions recognised by Egerton University provided the diplomas are at credits and above.

Mininum Entry Requirements for Bachelor's Degree
The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must:

  • Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

  • Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

  • Egerton University Statutes 2008 43
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher.

OR

  • Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent
  • Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

AND
Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.

To be admitted for a PRE-SERVICE DEGREE PROGRAM, a prospective candidate must have all the requirements set up by the joint Admission Board (JAB), with a prospective IN-SERVICE student must have completed a diplomaprogram in the relevant field and graduated with at least a CREDIT.

Bachelor of Education (Science) Course Subjects

Students may take two teaching subjects from the following areas:
Chemistry; Physics; Mathematics; Botany/Zoology; Geography
The Faculty of Education and Community Studies offers Professional courses for the programme including:-

  • Educational Foundations;
  • Educational Administration, Planning and Economics;
  • Educational Psychology and Counselling, and
  • Curriculum and Instruction.

The B.Ed (Science) Programme normally takes a minimum Period of four academic years. Each academic year consists of two Semesters. In addition, the students shall take twelve weeks of Teaching Practice during which they shall also carry out a project in one of their teaching subjects.

The minimum CFs for the Progamme shall be 144 CFs.
