Education - Science Program Offered at Karatina University

The Bachelor of Education (Science) programme is designed to produce professionally qualified teachers who will be competent in teaching science subjects in secondary schools and middle-level colleges.

In the first year, students must take mathematics and chemistry, and any other (physics and botany/zoology) as content subjects.

In the second year of study, a student drops one of the content subjects and pursues the remaining two, one as a major and the other a minor.

The major subject is that which the student is expected to teach up to form the IV level of secondary school, and must, therefore, spend more time covering its content.

For the minor subject, the student is normally taught up to form II level and the content coverage is, therefore, less and is normally completed by the end of the third year of study.

The Bachelor of Education (Science) degree program is offered on both a full-time basis only.

This Bachelor of Education (Science) programme at Karatina University, prepares qualified science teachers for secondary schools, colleges and tertiary institutions.

The general objectives of the programme are:

• To prepare teacher for an active career in all facets of professional Education;
• To develop the intellectual, professional and social characteristics of teachers to enable them to become responsible leaders within the school and the community;
• To develop the capacity of the teachers so that they should be able to teach effectively at the secondary school, colleges and tertiary levels;
• Identify research problems and design appropriate procedures for investigating and analysing them;
• To provide a basis for science Education training that enables the teachers to pursue advanced training in both professional and academic areas.

• Minimum mean grade at C+ (Plus) at KCSE with at least C+ in any two science subjects OR
• 2 Principals and subsidiary pass at A-level in relevant subjects OR
• A Diploma in Education (Science) from a recognized Institution
