About B.A Gender, Women and Development Studies Bachelors Degree program.

The degree in Gender, Women and Development Studies at Egerton University is designed to address multidisciplinary issues of gender, women and development from the African perspective. The programme targets decision-makers involved in the formulation of gender sensitive policies and those who wish to apply gender knowledge and skills essential to all careers and in the critical realisation of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Education For All (EFA) goals.

Knowledge on gender and development is relevant in social work, institutional management that promote social and gender equity, legal systems, and community development among others. Gender has become the key element for economic sustainability and social justice. Course participants will be drawn from qualified field practitioners working in areas such as community development, education, government, non-governmental agencies, religious organizations with community focused projects, former diploma course students in Gender, Poverty and Development and other participants with minimum requirements for admission into this programme.

Objectives of B.A Gender, Women and Development Studies

The multi disciplinary nature of the degree course in Gender, Women and Development Studies ate Egerton University will provide students with skills and knowledge required in government, NGOs, community based organizations and other relevant bodies involved in gender equity.

This course will enhance the government‘s objective of mainstreaming gender through its MDGs, since students will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge required in the society. The course will also provide knowledge and skills for further capacity building in the area of gender, women and development studies.
The fundamental aim of the programme is to contribute to the intellectual development of the study of gender and development from an interdisciplinary perspective through research. It aims to equip the student with appropriate applied knowledge, skills and attitudes related to gender, women and development.
The specific objectives of the programme are:

  1. To equip students with skills and knowledge to identify and analyse the importance of gender equity in development.
  2. To provide individuals with analytical knowledge and skills on organizational capacity building in relation to gender and development.
  3. To equip individuals with practical skills for gender mainstreaming in development.
  4. Prepare individuals to pursue careers in community development, education, government, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) and religious organizations.

Entry requirements for B.A Gender, Women and Development Studies

All Egerton University rules and regulations governing admission into the degree programmes shall apply
The applicants must have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E) with a minimum grade of C+ (plus) or its equivalent.
Candidates may be admitted to the Bachelor of Arts programme if they hold a diploma in Gender, Women and Development Studies of ―Credit‖ level or higher recognised by university senate.

n addition, applicants who have a diploma with a Credit level or higher in other related programmes that are relevant to gender from recognized institutions may be admitted to the degree programme.

Mininum Entry Requirements for Bachelor's Degree
The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must:

  • Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

  • Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

  • Egerton University Statutes 2008 43
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher.

OR

  • Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent
  • Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

AND
Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.

To be admitted for a PRE-SERVICE DEGREE PROGRAM, a prospective candidate must have all the requirements set up by the joint Admission Board (JAB), with a prospective IN-SERVICE student must have completed a diplomaprogram in the relevant field and graduated with at least a CREDIT.

B.A Gender, Women and Development Studies Course Subjects

The training for the Degree in Gender, Women and Development Studies shall extend for a period of not less than four academic years but not more than six academic years for part time students. This will include three months of attachment and report submission before graduation.
