Course Overview

Measurement is a very important activity in every branch of Engineering and Science. Instrumentation is a fundamental discipline and is understood well in terms of measurement systems. Instrumentation is important in product testing and quality control, monitoring in the interest of health, safety, cost, part of a control system, research and development, etc.

The ability to control effectively is often limited by the quality of measurements. Thus it is important for the Control Engineer to understand the quality and limitations of measurement systems. Similarly, the Instrument Engineer has to understand the nature and problems of a control system, and the quality and limitations of control philosophy.

The Bachelor of Science in Instrumentation and Control Engineering at Egerton University is designed to produce highly trained manpower in Instrumentation and Control Engineering ready to take up the challenges in industrial research, industrial and commercial organizations. The programme is broad-based and is developed so as to attain both academic and practical skills. It integrates instrumentation and control engineering systems. The programme is industry-oriented and is designed to produce graduate engineers capable of adapting to technological changes and in line with government policy of vision 2030.

Instrumentation and Control Engineers find career opportunities in a wide range of Fields such as industrial research, production and commercial organizations ranging from process industries to aero-space, economic and business modelling.

Minimum Entry Requirements

All candidates admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Instrumentation and Control Engineering programme must meet the minimum university admission criteria stipulated in the common university entrance regulations.
In addition the candidates must obtain at least the minimum cut-off points for the year as determined from any one of the following four cluster subjects in the KCSE.

  • Alternative A: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Either Biology or Either group III/IV/V subjects
  • Alternative B: Mathematics, Physical Science, Biological Sciences, Either group III/IV/V subjects

Those holding qualifications equivalent to the KCSE or above from institutions recognized by Egerton University Senate may also be admitted.
Admission may be offered to diploma holders in engineering disciplines passed with at least a credit.
Credit transfers for diploma holders or their equivalent may be considered, based on the guidelines by the Senate.
Self-sponsored applicants shall be required to meet the University and Faculty admission criteria.

Mininum Entry Requirements for Bachelor's Degree at Egerton University
The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must:

  • Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

  • Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

  • Egerton University Statutes 2008 43
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher.

OR

  • Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent
  • Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

AND
Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.

To be admitted for a PRE-SERVICE DEGREE PROGRAM, a prospective candidate must have all the requirements set up by the joint Admission Board (JAB), with a prospective IN-SERVICE student must have completed a diplomaprogram in the relevant field and graduated with at least a CREDIT.

Course Objectives

The main objectives of the Bachelor of Science in Instrumentation and Control Engineering Programme are:

  • To prepare an engineer who can plan, design and construct instrumentation and control systems.
  • To develop and inculcate the engineer with intellectual, imaginative and engineering skills, able to respond and adapt to change anticipate and initiate such a change.
  • To provide the graduate with a good foundation for postgraduate education.

Course Program

The normal duration of the Bachelor of Science in Instrumentation and Control Engineering  programme shall be five academic years. Each years in consist of two semesters, each of seventeen weeks duration. Part-time students shall be allowed to complete the programme within a period of 10 academic years.
