Course Overview

The decline in the contribution of the Agricultural sector to Kenya‟s Gross Domestic Product has been attributed to, among other things, poor technologies, and lack of well-trained manpower in this sector. The Agricultural Engineering programme at Egerton University covers areas such as Soil and Water Conservation, Farm Power and Machinery, Irrigation, Agricultural Structures, Agricultural Processing, and Renewable energy, which are all crucial in enhancing the performance of the Agricultural sector.

The programme has thus been designed with emphasis on practical approach incorporating the current advancements in technology to satisfy the technical manpower requirements for the Agricultural Industry and to achieve Kenya‟s development goal of industrialisation in the year 2030.

Minimum Entry Requirements

All candidates admitted to the degree programme of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering (B.Sc. Agricultural Engineering) at Egerton University must satisfy the minimum entrance requirements stipulated in the common university entrance regulations.

In addition, candidates must obtain at least the minimum grades in the following cluster subjects at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E).

  • ALTERNATIVE A : Mathematics: B+, Physics: B+ , Chemistry: B+
  • ALTERNATIVE B: Mathematics: B+, Physical Science: A-, Biological Sciences: A-
  • Either Biology or Either Geography or any
  • Geography or any Group IV subjects
  • Group IV subjects (i.e. technical subjects)
  • (i.e. technical group of subjects) B+


Those holding qualifications equivalent to the K.C.S.E above from institutions recognized by Egerton University Senate may also be admitted.
Admission may be offered to outstanding diploma holders in engineering disciplines who have passed with a credit or above or their equivalent from institutions recognized by Egerton University Senate. Such cases will be treated on individual merit.
Transfer of credit up to a maximum of 30% of the total CF may be considered for diploma holders based on the guidelines stipulated by the Senate.
Self-sponsored applicants shall be required to meet the University and Faculty admission criteria.

Mininum Entry Requirements for Bachelor's Degree
The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must:

  • Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

  • Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

  • Egerton University Statutes 2008 43
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher.

OR

  • Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent
  • Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

AND
Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.

To be admitted for a PRE-SERVICE DEGREE PROGRAM, a prospective candidate must have all the requirements set up by the joint Admission Board (JAB), with a prospective IN-SERVICE student must have completed a diplomaprogram in the relevant field and graduated with at least a CREDIT.

Course Objectives

The main aim of this programme is to train and graduate agricultural engineers. At the end, the programme will produce an engineer who will be able to:

  1. Prepare an agricultural engineer to plan, design, modify, and direct the manufacture of agricultural machinery & implements for different agricultural production systems.
  2. Prepare an engineer to plan and design Soil & Water conservation engineering structures and modern irrigation and drainage systems.
  3. Provide practical training to the engineer to contribute practical solutions to agricultural production problems.
  4. Inculcate the engineer with sound theoretical knowledge in engineering principles, sciences, research and in consultancy.
  5. Impart positive and responsive out-reach attitudes, initiative and creative thinking in their mission as engineers.
  6. Produce a professional engineer who understands ethical issues and responsibility of serving the society and the environment at large.
  7. Train an engineer equipped with effective written and oral communication skills.

Course Program

This BSc. Agricultural Engineering programme shall be covered in five academic years each consisting of two semesters of 17 weeks each.

All students are expected to undergo an Internal Engineering Practice and an external Industrial/Field Attachment each lasting 8 weeks after the third and fourth years, respectively.
