Course Overview

There is a wide range of research and industrial concerns that are increasingly making use of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences to solve a variety of problems. Employment opportunities for graduates of Biochemistry therefore exist in the following areas:

  1. Biomedical research institutes and hospital establishments;
  2. Agro-Industries and agro – based research institutes;
  3. Pharmaceutical Industries and Diagnostic laboratories;
  4. Health service environmental agencies in a variety of paramedical fields, brewing, food and other fermentation industries;
  5. Biotechnology and Molecular Biology concerns; and
  6. All Educational fields of Biochemistry.

Minimum Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission, candidates must satisfy the minimum entry requirements as set out by Egerton University Statute
In addition, candidates must have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education or its equivalent with a minimum grade as follows:-

  • Chemistry B or Physical Science B+
  • Physics B or Physical Science B+
  • Mathematics C+
  • Biology B or Biological Science B+

Alternatively, candidates with the following minimum A level passes will be considered-principal pass in each of the following subjects: Chemistry; Physics; Biology; Mathematics.
Have any other qualifications accepted by Egerton University Senate as equivalent.

Mininum Entry Requirements for Bachelor's Degree
The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must:

  • Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

  • Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

  • Egerton University Statutes 2008 43
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher.

OR

  • Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent
  • Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

AND
Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.

To be admitted for a PRE-SERVICE DEGREE PROGRAM, a prospective candidate must have all the requirements set up by the joint Admission Board (JAB), with a prospective IN-SERVICE student must have completed a diplomaprogram in the relevant field and graduated with at least a CREDIT.

Course Objectives

The overall purpose of the B.Sc. in Biochemistry programme at Egerton University is to prepare graduates for scientific and technical roles in the above fields. The course provides a flexible approach to enable students take electives suited to their needs. At the end of the programme, the students will be expected to:

  • have acquired necessary theoretical and practical skills in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biomedical Science to enable them engage in gainful self-employment such as consultancy.
  • provide the skilled manpower required by Biomedical and Agro-based research and development Institutions, Institutions of higher learning and Industry; hence contributing to national economic growth.
  • have acquired the necessary theoretical and practical competencies in Biochemistry to enable them undertake post-graduate studies in recognized Institutions of higher learning.

Course Program

The programme shall extend over a duration of four academic years each consisting of two semesters of 15 weeks of teaching and 2 weeks of examination. Students must take all scheduled courses in a given Semester and appear for all examinations.
